*You are financially responsible for all damages caused by any fire you start.*

Open fires are permitted inside city parks (ie. Woodland park, Pond park, etc.) as long as:

  • Fire is in a designated fireplace, fire pit, or facility intended to contain a fire.
  • The fire occurs between November 1 and May 31, unless otherwise posted. 
  • There may also be emergency closure dates, based on red flag days, or other city, county, state or nationally imposed restrictions.
  • Gas grills and other self-contained barbecues may also be used within the City parks within the above open fire dates.
  • All “Steps for a proper burn” criteria are met. See below.

Open fires are permitted on personal property as long as:

  • Fire is in a designated fireplace, fire pit, or facility intended to contain a fire.
  • It is not a “mandatory no burn day” per Utah DEQ website
  • There may be other emergency closure dates, based on red flag days, or other city, county, state or nationally imposed restrictions.
  • All “Steps for a proper burn” criteria are met. See below.

Steps for a proper burn

  • Notify the Fire Dept. at (801) 451-2842 prior to burn, so it can be documented with the 911 operator.
  • Fire must be constantly attended by a person 18 years of age or older.
  • Pit must be 3ft x 2ft, or smaller, and burning material must easily fit within that space.
  • Pit must be 25ft from any structure, including fencing, sheds, property line, etc.
  • No burning of garbage, yard waste, leaves, tires, etc.
  • Material to be burned must be clean, dry wood. 
  • Keep cell phone close by.
  • Keep water supply close by, such as a hose or a bucket of water.
  • Clear area of trees, shrubs, dead grass etc..
  • Have the fire out by 10:00 PM.

For Trench Burn/Agricultural Burn/Burn Permit:

A permit must be obtained before any agricultural burns. Only plots over 2 acres or 25+ fruit trees apply. http://air.utah.gov/OpenBurning/form/index.php

Can I have a fire up Farmington Canyon?

We don’t have jurisdiction in Farmington Canyon and you need to review the following websites for more information. All fires on Forest service land must comply with current regulations.
